In Why Take Food Seriously? Because Your Life Depends on It, by Mark Bittman the audience is America and the people of America. Mark tries to appeal to this audience by telling them about how we are too obsessed with food and eating badly, instead of worrying about the important things with food like where it is grown. He tries to use information about how the people if we stop overconsumption of food we could help feed the other people in this world that struggle from not having food. The rhetorical element in this article is mainly logos, but has some ethos. The use of ethos is at the beginning of the article when he is state’s his experience in this field of food. Logos is used when Bittman is trying to persuade the audience by telling about how we started out strong with home cooking than declined as the years went on, but once diseases and acute illnesses started to appear people started to actually think about what they were doing with their food. Mark’s argument is an effective one. He points out all the flaws that people are doing with food, and helps people realize that people need to change to help others in the world. He is simply trying to inform everyone that there is change that needs to take place.
